For many of us, the word networking makes us want to run for the hills. It can sound like something suited to a corporate boardroom, not a room full of artists, makers, and creatives.
In a post-covid world where tech infiltrates so much of our daily lives, the chance to connect face-to-face has never felt more important.
Whether it is a market stallholder you chat with over coffee, a workshop partner who shares tips, or another maker you meet at a panel talk, in-person connections often spark opportunities you would never find scrolling online.
Why network?
- Support and encouragement: Running a creative business can feel isolating. Meeting others who “get it” reminds you that you are not alone.
- Opportunities for collaboration: Ideas grow bigger when shared. From joint exhibitions to product collaborations, real-life connections often blossom into creative projects.
- Learning from peers: Makers swap tips freely in conversation, from where to source eco packaging to how to price a wholesale order.
- Visibility: Being physically present at events, panels, and markets helps others put a face to your brand and remember you.
How to network (without cringing)
If you are neurodivergent, introverted, or simply not a natural “mingler,” the thought of walking into a room full of strangers can feel overwhelming or downright dreadful.
Here are a few tricks to make it easier:
- Set a small goal: Aim to have one meaningful conversation rather than working the whole room.
- Bring a buddy: Attending with a friend can make introductions less intimidating.
- Use questions as your opener: “How did you find out about this event?” or “What are you working on right now?” are great starts.
- Have a short intro ready: A sentence or two about who you are and what you make is plenty.
- Take breaks: Step outside, grab a drink, or stand back if you need to recharge. Nobody networks non-stop.
What kinds of events are fruitful?
Not all gatherings will be right for you, so choose events that feel relevant and valuable:
- Markets and fairs: Great for connecting with other stallholders and future collaborators, not just customers.
- Workshops: Smaller groups and shared learning make it easier to connect.
- Panel discussions and talks: Like our Crafting Conversation series, these events are designed for both inspiration and connection.
- Local maker meet-ups: Informal but often the most rewarding, because everyone is there for the same reason; community.
Networking does not have to mean schmoozing with a name badge. For makers, it is about creating genuine connections that help you feel supported, inspired, and part of a bigger community. The more we show up for one another, the stronger our creative ecosystem becomes.
