When you’re running your own creative business, it’s easy to fall into the habit of doing everything solo.
You wear all the hats: designer, maker, packer, marketer, bookkeeper and even tea-maker! Sometimes, the smartest move is to share that warm and lovely spotlight.
Collaborating with other makers in business can be an energising way to expand your reach, spark new ideas, and connect with fresh audiences who might never have stumbled across your work otherwise. Also, it doesn’t mean giving up control or diluting your brand.
Done right, a good collaboration is more of a boost than a burden.
Why collaborate?
First up, it can open doors. When you team up with someone who shares similar values, but has a different customer base, you get to meet their audience without needing to start from scratch. It’s a gentle, organic way to grow your visibility and build trust with people who are already inclined to like what you do.

It also gives you the chance to be seen in a new light. Whether it’s through a co-designed product, a shared giveaway, or a collaborative event, you’re showing your customers that your brand is dynamic and engaged. Plus, let’s face it, it can be just plain fun to work with someone who gets what it’s like to run a maker business too.
What makes a good collaboration?
It’s tempting to say yes to every opportunity, but not every collaboration is the right fit. A good starting point is to look for fellow makers whose values align with your own. Think sustainability, handmade ethics, creative approach, and tone of voice. Ideally, you’ll want someone whose audience would genuinely appreciate what you do, and vice versa.
Equally important is how they engage with their audience. You don’t need to partner with someone who has tens of thousands of followers. An engaged, loyal following is far more powerful than vanity metrics. If their community feels like the kind of crowd you’d love to be part of, that’s a great sign.
Ideas for collaboration
Not sure where to start? Here are a few classic and not-so-classic ways to join forces:
- Giveaways: Simple but effective. Pool your products together and invite followers to enter by following both accounts, tagging a friend, or signing up to your newsletters. It’s a great way to grow your reach quickly, as long as the prize feels truly desirable. Make sure you stick to the rules of the platform you’re using. Here’s some guidelines we prepared earlier.
- Co-created products: Got complementary skills? Think ceramics and illustrations, textiles and scents, jewellery and glasswork. When two creative styles come together with intention, it can result in something really special.
- Events and markets: Share a stall, host a pop-up, or co-run a workshop. Collaborating on events can halve the workload and double the audience.
- Photo shoots or styled campaigns: Team up with makers whose work complements yours and create a sweet batch of content that you can both use. It’s a win-win.
- Limited edition bundles: Package up your products with another maker’s to create a themed gift set, like a self-care kit or cosy home pack. A smart way to boost sales while giving customers something fresh.
A few things to keep in mind
Like any good relationship, collaborations work best with clear communication. Be up front about expectations, timelines, and responsibilities. Will you split costs? Who’s posting what, and when? What happens if something changes? It’s not about being overly formal, just being professional and making sure you’re both on the same page from the start.
It’s also worth thinking about how the collaboration aligns with your own goals. Is it about growing your audience? Adding value for your existing customers? Testing a new idea? Having clarity on the ‘why’ will help you say yes to the right opportunities, and gracefully decline the ones that aren’t quite for you.
