Sometimes a small website tweak is all you need…
You’ve built a maker business of awesome products, but is your website working as hard as it could be?
For many makers, your website is your storefront, market stall, and brand hub all rolled into one. But if it’s cluttered, confusing, or doesn’t reflect the essence of what you do, it might be turning potential customers away.
The good news? You don’t need a full redesign to see results. A few small tweaks can make a big difference.
Here are five website tweaks you can make for simple, impactful change. Plus read on for more information about our upcoming Members Only Workshop, Elevate Your Website: Live Feedback for Makers.

1. Simplify Your Homepage
Your homepage is like your front window, it should invite people in, not overwhelm them. I’ve always referred to designing your homepage as “virtual merchandising”, a play on the term visual merchandising. There’s an art to the way we place products both IRL and online that can help influence someone to buy them!
What we often see:
A cluttered page with too many sections, images, or messages competing for attention.
Try this instead:
Keep it focused. Let your homepage clearly answer:
- What do you make?
- Who is it for?
- What should they do next?
Whether that’s “Shop now,” “Browse collections,” or “Join my email list,” give visitors one clear next step.

2. Clarify Your Message
You only have a few seconds to help a visitor understand what you do and why it matters. I recommend avoiding jargon and being as clear as possible. Not only is clarity kindness (especially for neurodivergent people), it’s better for SEO!
What we often see:
Beautiful images, but vague or clever text that doesn’t actually say what you sell.
Try this instead:
Use simple, direct language.
For example:
“Handmade silver jewellery inspired by the Australian bush, crafted in small batches from my Melbourne studio.”
3. Make Contact Easy
Your customers should never have to hunt for a way to reach you. When people can reach you easily, they’re more likely to trust and buy from you.
What we often see:
No contact form, missing email address, or social links hidden away.
Try this instead:
- Add a “Contact” link in your top menu and footer.
- Include a form or email address.
- Consider an FAQ page if you get repeat questions.
4. Add Your Personality
Your website should feel like a reflection of you — not just a product catalogue. People buy handmade because they care about who made it. Let them see you.
What we often see:
Sites that feel impersonal or overly templated, without much warmth or story.
Try this instead:
- Show your face or your process.
- Tell your story in your own voice.
- Include behind-the-scenes photos or a personal note on your About page.

5. Strengthen Your Product Pages
Even when someone loves your work, a confusing product page can stop them from buying. Make it easy for people to say yes.
What we often see:
Missing information, unclear pricing, poor photos, or unanswered shipping questions.
Try this instead:
- Include clear titles and descriptions
- Add sizes, materials, and pricing
- Show shipping timeframes and return info
- Use beautiful, clear product images
